Just back from a week long trip to North Carolina searching for somewhere to enjoy semi-retirement, whatever that is, which is why I didn't do any posting. But I wasn't worried. The world continues to provide grist for the mill.
Let's begin with news you can use: For those of you bemoaning the lack of venues for cock fighting, an Oklahoma state senator feels your pain. His solution: The Lawmaker wants tiny boxing gloves on roosters. (Phew. I thought this was another safe-sex gambit. I can't imagine how tiny boxing gloves would prevent the spread of venereal disease, plus lacing them up not only would be a problem, but talk about killing a romantic moment.)
"It's like the fencing that you see on the Olympics, you know, where they have little balls on the ends of the swords and the fencers wear vests," said Shurden. So let me get this straight. We put boxing gloves on the chickens and then give them foils or epees? How do they hold them with gloves on? Superglue?
I know what you're thinking: It's a cock & bull story. (Sorry.)
Page Two: The "Duh" factor. The Williams controversy finally got through the Bush Bubble. Headline: Stop hiring columnists, Bush orders Cabinet. What he told them behind closed doors? "Hey, guys and gals, heck and shucks, we don't have to hire them. The ones we control salivate when we ring the bell & the others can't break through the impenetrable shield (aka, bubble)."
And the new Sec'y of State sounded a ringing call to her new troops when she took office. 'History Is Calling Us,' Rice Tells State Department. Exactly what history is calling us, she didn't say. Blind? Obtuse? Arrogant? Isolated? Dishonest? Personally, I wouldn't use those words because the Bush Bubble Machine scares the crap out of me. But others might. I love Bush. I really do.
And finally, I think the U.S. owes a big apology to our friends down below the border. Mexico upset by U.S. travel warning. Let's see, over the past six months, 27 Americans have been kidnapped and two killed at the northern border region. What were they doing down there, anyway? When are we going to stop coddling our citizens and make them take responsibility for their own actions. You travel, you take the risks. Why today alone, 109.589 people will die in car accidents in the U.S. and no one gets upset about that?
It's a clear example of this administrations anti-Hispanic tendencies.
Of course, you have to wonder, after the first few abductions, why the Mexican gov't didn't think "oops, maybe we should look into this." But that's imposing our values on them, and America doesn't do that.
Mexico upset? Probably not half as upset as the relatives of those now in the hands of large hairy men who don't bathe and carry big guns. Personally, I'm sticking with North Carolina...except for those areas still fighting the Civil War.
